Land
has both monetary and aesthetic value which can be negatively
affected through contamination. In addition, in terms of the
National Water Act (Act 36 of 1998) and the National Environmental
Management Act (NEMA - Act 107, 1998) it is an offence to
conduct an activity that will result in water becoming polluted,
including groundwater.
Subsurface monitoring has been recognized as one of the more
important aspects requiring attention within a site’s
Environmental Management System—especially where ISO
14001 accreditation is concerned.
Many industrial sites have groundwater monitoring wells and
inspection wells around their underground storage tanks. Most
landfill sites should have groundwater monitoring wells. However,
all too often inappropriate or uncalled for monitoring is
undertaken, resulting in unnecessary cost. Of key importance
is the need to make the best use of these wells and undertake
proper interpretation of the data collected. The significance
of any contamination must be assessed and the right action
taken where needed. Data storage and presentation is another
key issue. Data should be readily available and displayed
in such a manner that they can be easily understood and used

provide practical and cost effective subsurface monitoring
services.
|
Subsurface monitoring considers the condition of soil and groundwater. In certain
cases it is also necessary to consider soil vapour,
ie accumulation of gases.
For subsurface monitoring, one would consider the,
condition of soil, depth to groundwater, flow direction,
quality changes, rate of migration, plume development
and potential for impact at a point of exposure.
Proper interpretation and presentation of data is key
to the success of any subsurface monitoring.
|

Having the right equipment and protocol
for subsurface monitoring is vitally important in terms
of the reliability of the results and their legal standing.
