Introduction
Morris Environmental & Groundwater Alliances () was formed on 15 December 1999 to provide independent excellence in environmental consulting services. We are pleased to provide you with the first edition of our newsletter, the phone, which we trust that you will enjoy. To view more editions of the phone, please click here.

Newsflash Items
  • Over the past year has involved over 40 other groups and individuals in our project teams.
  • project teams are most successful when they form a ‘Project Partnership’ which includes the client’s representatives and other team members with the right skills for the project needs.
  • is currently involved with projects in 7 different centres throughout southern Africa.
  • Ritchie Morris is involved in an innovative project with John Murray of M-GIS and the Catchment Management Department of the City of Cape Town developing a Water Pollution Abatement Plan for the Salt River Catchment.
  • Over the past year, projects have taken Mary-Jane Morris to Swaziland and Zambia.
  • During 2000 Mary-Jane attended an internationally accredited Environmental Auditors course and obtained a pass rate of 96%. Ritchie was curious to know where the other 4% had gone.
  • has received very favourable feedback from both clients and authorities on the quality and presentation of our work.
  • Ann-Carol Leach (Nee Simpson) recently joined the team as an independent consulting hydrogeologist and is assisting with several environmental projects in the Cape Town area.

's Office Administrator
In March 2001 was pleased to welcome Carol Barnes as our Office Administrator. Carol, who works part-time (mornings), brings her experience from working in a family business and we are sure that she will be an important player within the team.

Ritchie Morris Pr Sci Nat, BSc Hons
Ritchie is the founder of and is an Environmental hydrogeologist with over 15 years of experience in the southern African region. Most of Ritchie’s work is for industry, however, several projects have recently been undertaken for the public sector and individual developers within the private sector.

Mary-Jane Morris BSc Hons
Mary-Jane is an Environmental Management Specialist and she joined the team in January 2001. Previously Mary-Jane was with Deloitte and Touche where she managed the Environmental Business Services Group. Mary-Jane has extensive experience with environmental matters throughout southern Africa.

teams up with Geosure

The photo shows Deven Naidoo of Geosure (Pty) Ltd undertaking soil field tests at an industrial site south of Durban.

In February 2001 Ritchie Morris of and Deven Naidoo of Geosure (PTY) Ltd, which is based in Durban, formed an Alliance Partnership in the KwaZulu Natal region for industrial environmental projects. Deven is the Managing Director of Geosure, which he founded in 1999. He has a BSc Honours in geology, is registered as a Professional Natural Scientist and practices as an Engineering Geologist. He has extensive experience with geotechnical conditions within the KwaZulu Natal region.

Ritchie’s experience and track record with environmental assessment and the management of contamination issues at industrial sites, together with Deven’s knowledge of the local KwaZulu Natal conditions are extremely complimentary. The -Geosure Alliance is well placed to offer a quality environmental service. and Geosure are currently involved with detailed projects at two large industrial sites within the Durban area.

Computers & Equipment

has taken a responsible approach to the security of their office computing and communication systems. Our office is equipped with several powerful computers, the most recently acquired being a state of the art system capable of operating most sophisticated packages. We have recently networked our office and an ISDN line will be installed by the end of May. Our computers are equipped with Norton Symantic anti-virus programmes which are updated weekly. We also operate a tape streamer for backups, have CD writing, DVD drivers plus scanning capabilities.

Conference Attendance

acknowledge the importance of remaining in the forefront of innovative technologies and thinking within the environmental management field. For this reason we view the attendance at conferences and the participation in technology groups being vital to our service commitment. During 2000 Ritchie presented a paper at the Congress of the International Association of Hydrogeologists. In May 2001 Mary-Jane attended the Imibizo ‘A Gathering of Leaders’ conference hosted by the Industrial Environmental Forum.

  • During 2000 Ritchie was involved with an Environmental Due Diligence audit at TRW’s South Africa manufacturing facility in Atlantis, north of Cape Town. TRW is an international company and one of the World’s leading motor vehicle safety components manufacturers.
  • Mary-Jane has recently been appointed to assist TRW with the development of an Environmental Management System and ISO 14001 accreditation thereof for the Atlantis Factory.
  • Mary-Jane is a key member of an international team responsible for developing Environmental Management Plans for several copper mines in the Zambian Copper Belt region.

Mary-Jane gets contracted

Since July 2000 Mary-Jane has been providing strategic environmental advice to the Department of Environmental Cultural Affairs and Sport (DECAS) of the Western Cape Provincial Government. This part-time contract has seen Mary-Jane assist DECAS with:

  • The facilitation of a strategic planning process;
  • The development of procedures to support the decision making role of the Department.

It has provided opportunity for Mary-Jane to obtain good insight into the EIA process requirements.

's Biopiles

Enhancing nature’s mechanisms can save clients money. have added to their bioremediation skills by successfully completing the remedaition of oil impacted soils at an industrial site. Engineered biopiles (see photograph) were employed at this site.

Alliance with T&P Contractors for this project consciously contributed to the skills development of one of their employees, Mr Mzukisi Winti.
