| Ritchie practices as an Environmental
Hydrogeologist and has over 16 years in the consulting profession.
His qualifications include a BSc Honours in geology and geography
from Rhodes University (1985) and a Diploma in Business Management
(1993). In addition, Ritchie completed the course in 'Treatment Technologies
for Contaminated Soil and Groundwater' run by the USA National Groundwater
Association (Atlanta, 1995). At the invitation of Shell South Africa,
Ritchie attended a three day training course run by Shell Thornton
(UK) on the RBCA model (1996). Also in 1996 he was fortunate to visit
the Borden Groundwater Pollution and Remediation Research site near
Alliston (Canada) run by the Groundwater Department of Waterloo University.
This provided Ritchie with a good insight into emerging remediation
technologies. He has undertaken part-time lecturing at the University
of Cape Town and the Cape Technikon and in 2000 presented a course
on Phase II and III Environmental Due Diligence Auditing at the International
Association of Impact Assessment (SA Chapter) Conference in Worcester,
South Africa. He is a member of several national and international
professional societies and has published many papers
and technical articles.
Ritchie's experience has over the past 10 years tended to concentrate
on subsurface contamination, environmental hazard and risk assessment
and environmental due diligence investigations. Recently he has
had opportunity to undertake several technical Peer Review's of
projects for a variety of industry groups. Besides the industrial
and corporate environmental work, Ritchie has also been involved
with groundwater resource assessment, development, protection and
management projects. During 2001 Ritchie undertook a project for
the Catchment Management Department of the Cape Metropolitan Administration
which entailed developing innovative methods by using 'Environmental
Hazard Ranking' as a tool for formulating 'Urban Catchment Water
Pollution Abatement Plans'.
Ritchie has extensive experience with environmental issues related
to the petro-chemical, fertilizer, explosives, animal feeds, agro-chemicals,
paints, used oil, drum reconditioning, metal plating and iron smelter
industries.
His hobbies include woodwork, listening to music, gardening, underwater
photography, fishing and enjoying a glass of good red wine with
friends.
